An idea occurs in the flash of a second. It is whatever that comes before the mind as a result of thought. An idea can stay in the mind and haunt you until it takes a shape that you may want to express in different ways. It can be expressed through words, writing, painting, music, sculpture or through deep philosophy.

What is an  idea? It starts with Imagination, which you Develop,  Execute and finally Adapt if you are satisfied. If not, the search continues.

The capacity to create and understand the meaning of ideas is an essential quality of human beings. In fact we take pride that this is what distinguishes us from all other creatures though that is a moot point. Other creatures in nature behave instinctively. We can think, react, rationalise act immediately, postpone or simply discard an instinctive reaction through our ability to think, ideate and act.

An idea can be a reflex, spontaneous reaction without thought or serious reflection. On the other hand an idea can germinate for ages before it takes concrete shape.

Ideas lead to imagination and wonder. Ideas can hold many secrets. Ideas create history. Ideas can change life.

Ideas can become shadows and truth, dreams and reality, victory and defeat, happiness and sorrow.

Ideas gives life to a human body, ideas give life to a stone. Ideas can inspire to change lifestyles or it can cause revolutions. Ideas can take you to space or to the depths of the seas. Ideas can help you explore the known and the unknown.

Ideas can become representations. Ideas can be Miro’s dot on the white canvas or it can be a whole wall of Guernica or the roof of the Sistine Chapel. It can be paintings on the walls of caves in Ajanta and Ellora or marvellous sculptures on a temple wall.

Ideas can be a snatch of a tune or it can be the sound of words set to music that bares the heart. Ideas can become beautiful imagery expressed through the hands and feet of a dancer.

Ideas give you the illusion that you are their owner. If only they could be treated as common social property and delinked from commercial exploitation, they could transform the lives of humanity, especially in the alleviation of diseases and poverty.

In the not too distant past great inventions and discoveries were not treated as private intellectual property, an idea that took birth in the 19th century and became a commonplace in late 20th century. Great thinkers were never motivated by profits. Their ideas served the entire humanity. Today in the era of WTO,…if only wishes were horses, the poor need not die of poverty!

And finally, Ideas are used as Power. Power corrupts absolutely.

“….an idea can germinate for ages before it takes concrete shape”, I agree. So many times when I have a project in mind or indeed think I am ready to start, thoughts buzz round inside my head like trapped bees, forcing me to think and rethink where I want to take it.

Thank you Padmini for the wishes, May your year ahead hold pleasant surprises, good health and a little adventure!

  3. Delirious says:

Yes, ideas can be quite powerful! But it depends on whether or not the person with the idea has the strength and courage to pursue it!

    Happy new year Padmini!

  5. There are so many ways to express what is an idea. You touched on quite a few of them.

I wish you a wonderful new year, Padmini!

  6. Rummuser says:

Now I understand why I am bereft of ideas! We need to be closer to each other. Some of your wisdom may just rub off on me!
