People fear many things
Fear is expressed as anxieties
Panic about our future
Panic about our family
Panic about our work or business

Some anxieties
Are milder, bearable
Some very severe leading to panic
Some can challenge and even
Impact your sanity

Fear is corrosive
Eating away at our
Physical, mental
Or spiritual health
Fear takes over, panic sets in

We can’t change our future
By becoming anxious about it
Our life you see
Is always uncertain,
Unpredictable and unchartered

We do not know our future
But we panic, are terrorized
When we go on imagining
Problems and dangers
And then there is no end to it

The mind is a monkey
It places me as a protagonist
As the hero or heroine
Of every tragedy, accident
Robbery or disaster

I am beset with panic
I imagine such events
Happening to me
To my beloved family
In a never-ending loop

Fear is universal
Panic is common
To all human beings
Young or old
Animal and plants, creation

Fear and panic are
Sisters that support
Each other, an instinctive
Natural emotion provided by nature
In all living beings

Do not condemn it
For it is but a part of
Our natural defence mechanism
An alert to a threat
From the outside world

Fear is a just warning signal
A precautionary measure
To protect ourselves
Panic is a reaction
To fear, terror, horror

Fear even causes
A bio chemical physical change
A temporary rush of adrenaline
We derive the strength
To fight from this physical reaction

There are fearless people
With no possessions of their own
And there are people
With security and possessions
Who are afraid all the time

A person with unlimited power
Is beset with many problems
Centred on his power, fear of losing it
He panics and resorts
To any measures to retain it

Overcome fear, panic not
Strengthen the mind
When you strip yourself
Of whatever power you have
You still remain the same person

Remember however
Fear is only useful
If welcomed as messenger
Who is there to caution us
Of an impending problem
Do not ever entertain fear

As a permanent guest
Panic will drive away confidence
Faith and logical reasoning
And retard our mental
And spiritual growth

Panic can be addressed
Fear can be set aside
If you think of now, this minute
And then you can learn
To celebrate life

  1. grannymar says:

I have learned to live in the moment, after all none of us are promised tomorrow, but we can live in hope.

  2. Delirious says:

I think panic really is the moment when our fears are realized and we know that we have lost control!

  3. Rummuser says:

You epitomize a non panicking, non fearing personality. The unfortunate others who are prone to such feelings get carried away quite easily as Ranjan recently saw in his aunt at Hyderabad. I saw our father panicking any number of times during his last few months. No amount of assuaging him would stop him from panicking about the smallest discomfort. Despite verbally expressing a desire to die, he was scared of it and would panic that it was imminent. I hope that none of us have to ever go through that kind of fear and panic.

  4. Maxi says:

How true the verse about fearless people and those afraid all the time. If we cling to possessions they own us, instead of the reverse.

Blessings to you Padmini, hope all is well.
